How does gene technology affect the faces of the future?
Will the future face be shaped by gene technology rather than by biological evolution?
Scientists believe that facial features are the product of many genes and that these genes may interact in a complex way to produce a unique face. As yet, however, not a single gene involved in the formation of facial features has been discovered.
However, in order to assemble a consistent facial appearance, genes must code for a number of facial features. The converse is also true. Since Celsus (25 B.C.-45 A.D.), physicians have attempted to correlate the face to disease. In Downs syndrome and Noonan's Syndrome, the atypical faces are mapped against the facial norms of the population, thereby enabling the use of the face in the diagnosis of disease.
Scientists are currently researching more subtle variations in the relationships between facial form and disease, including the early diagnosis of schizophrenia and other neurological conditions.
Would you like to be able to chose the face of your child and or to know at birth whether he or she will develop a physical or neurological illness?
