What is the future face?
How will we use our new technologies to determine the face's features, contours and future shapes?
Within commercial culture and the media, faces are used to manipulate appearances and popular values and to endorse products. But the faces we see in newspapers and magazines, in film and television, have often been touched-up and computer-manipulated.
Radical new possibilities have been opened-up both by the manipulation of facial images in the media and by the analysis of faces to classify them for identification on security applications.
The human brain perceives the relationship between a living and a dead face, but rarely does it perceive a 'life-like' robot or avatar as alive. So, how do we experience a digital face? How do digitized expressions communicate? And, as digital faces become more 'real', how will our notions of identity be affected? How will these new types of faces become accepted?
This section considers the extreme ways in which future technologies may alter both our appearances and our perceptions of identity. Comparing a human face with the digital version serves to highlight the aspects of the original that signify humanity, uniqueness and enigma.
Can you tell which of the faces in the section of the exhibition are real faces, which have been manipulated, and which are entirely digital?
What do we want our faces to look like in the future?
